Thrift

Pennies grow to nickels,
Then to shiny dimes;
Up the hill to dollars,
So the money climbs.

If you’re very careful
You will surely see
How your little savings
Will grow thriftily!

Gertrude McFuzz

There once was a girl-bird named Gertrude McFuzz.
And she had the smallest plain tail that ever was.
One droppy-droop feather, that’s all she had.
And oh! That one feather made Gertrude so sad.
For there was another young bird that she knew,
A fancy young birdie named Lolla-Lee-Lou.

I must find some pill on top of some hill!
And I will! Gertrude shouted at the top of her voice.
And so Gertrude found her pill vine and ate 19!
Her feathers popped out like popcorn.
She tried to fly but she could not.
So she cried for help.

Her Uncle and Aunt came with Mother and Father and Sister and Brother
And cousins, too.
It took two weeks to take her home.
And about one other week to pull them out!
My she was sore.
They pulled and pulled ‘til just one was left.
AND THAT WAS THAT.
